What Is a Bay Window?

A bay window is a structure that projects outward from a home’s exterior wall to create a recessed area in the interior space. For this reason, you may also see them referred to as projection windows.

Most bay windows use three window panels. The middle panel is usually a large fixed window, similar to a picture window. Flanking either side of the center window panel are two smaller side window panels. Most bay windows use operable windows for these side panels. These might be casement windows or, less commonly, double-hung windows.

Bay & Bow Windows: What’s the Difference?

Bay windows and bow windows are similar, but not interchangeable terms. Rather, a bow window is a specific type of bay window.

Bay windows have three panels, which gives them a more angular look. Bow windows, on the other hand, have four or more panels, creating a more rounded shape.

Because bow windows have a rounder curve, they tend to be wider, and work best in a larger area like a living room. They are also more complex, and therefore more expensive, to install than a traditional bay window.

Canted Bay Windows

Canted windows are the standard bay window with three panels. What makes a window canted is the 30-40° angle at which the side panels meet the center panel. This style of bay window has a distinctly Victorian architectural style that works well with craftsman and colonial homes.

Oriel Windows

Oriel windows date back to the Renaissance and have an ornate design. This type of bay window doesn’t go all the way down to the ground. Instead, it has a support bracket underneath that meets the exterior wall at an angle. As such, oriel windows are usually on the upper floor of a home.

Box Bay Windows

Box bay windows have a more modern look than other types of bay windows. Rather than a curved shape, the side panels of a box bay window meet the center panel at a right angle, forming a box. While rounded bay windows often serve as dining areas, box bay windows are usually smaller, with only enough room for a bench or some house plants.

Circle Bay Windows

Finally, circle bay windows lean more into the curvature of the bay area. The exterior forms a completely rounded projection, usually with extra molding around the window panels. While they offer lots of natural light, circle bay window installation is usually the most expensive of any type of bay window.
