Double-hung windows are one of the most popular styles of replacement windows that homeowners have installed. The reason for that is that this type of window has a number of benefits that make it an ideal choice. They are energy-efficient and the window frame is readily accessible, which makes for an easy cleaning process. As a result, getting clean double-hung windows is something one can DIY within a relatively short amount of time.
However, before you do so, there are some helpful things you should know before trying to clean your new windows. After all, the last thing you would want to do is damage the window glass and then have to get a window replacement. While these windows are highly durable, cleaning them in an incorrect fashion can damage the glass or frame. An Important Note About Different Types of Window Styles
While this may risk stating the obvious, it is important to note that double-hung windows are just that–double-hung windows. They are not vinyl windows, single-hung windows, or casement windows.
This is important to point out for a very specific reason. Each of these window styles has a unique and correct way of cleaning them. If you have previous experience with one of these other types of windows, it is important to note that not all of the steps from the previous cleaning process that you used will be relevant to your double-hung windows. In fact, in some instances, using those methods on your current windows could damage the exterior glass or window screens.
In short, we ask that you adhere to the steps below as carefully as possible to protect your new windows. They are an integral part of your home’s style and security, and we want them to be properly cared for and last for many years to come.
What Are the Steps for Cleaning Double-Hung Windows?
Below, we will discuss the ideal process for cleaning your double-hung windows in more detail. Here’s what you need to know.
Begin With Assembling the Correct Tool Kit for the Job
No matter what you are doing in life, every task has a tool or set of tools that is designed to help you successfully complete the task in question. It’s no different when it comes to knowing how to clean double-hung windows correctly. Below is a list of cleaning tools that you will need to have before trying to clean your windows:
- Squeegee
- Glass cleaner (such as Windex)
- White vinegar
- Microfiber cloth
- Paper towels
- Empty spray bottle
- Duster
Once you have assembled all of these implements, prepare a cleaning solution that is 50% white vinegar and 50% water in the empty spray bottle. You will be using this not on the glass itself, but the frames of the window and the inside tracks in order to remove grime and debris. Upon preparing the solution correctly and filling up your spray bottle, you are then ready to move on to the next step of the process and begin cleaning your double-hung windows.
Begin by Making Sure That the Window Is in an Unlocked Position
This may seem like a given, but it absolutely bears stating at the outset. In order to clean your double-hung windows, you must make certain that they are unlocked. This will allow you access to both sides of the window glass and the inside of the window frame. That is one of the benefits of double-hung windows–that you can easily access both sides.
Open up the Bottom Sash of the Window
Once the window has been completely unlocked, you can open the bottom sash. It only needs to be open a couple of inches. This step is often overlooked, but without doing so, you can not access all areas of the window that need to be cleaned.
Locate and Use the Tilt Latches to Release the Bottom Sash
Find the tilt latches on either side of the top rail and press them towards each other lightly until the sash is released from the window frame. Once the sash is released, you can begin to lean it inward. You will need to repeat these steps to open the top stash as well. It is important to note that the top sash cannot be opened before the bottom sash. These steps have to be done exactly in this order for the safety of the window.
Release the Top Sash and Begin Cleaning
Once the top sash has been released, you can then remove the window screen completely. Dust away any dust with your duster before wetting anything. Once you have removed the dry dust, use the cleaning solution on any dirt or grime that remains. You can then use the glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth to clean the glass of the window thoroughly. Once that is complete, refasten the sashes, beginning with the top one, and secure the window in place again.
