Casement vs. Sliding Windows: What You Need to Know

Are you a homeowner looking at replacement windows and wondering what the best window styles are? The answer depends on a variety of factors, and it’s good to consider all of them. We at Remodel USA want you to make an educated decision when selecting new windows, and in this guide, we offer you a detailed look at the unique features of casement vs. sliding windows (also called slider windows).

What Are Casement and Sliding Windows?

To properly describe a casement window, let’s see how it compares to a sliding window.

A casement window opens outward. The whole window opens to about a 90-degree angle. This is possible because it has a hinge or hinges on one side. It is typically operated with a crank mechanism, so these are sometimes called crank windows.

A sliding window, on the other hand, uses a sliding mechanism to open and close horizontally along the window frame so it does not take up any exterior space.

Both types of windows offer a locking mechanism, a tight seal, and maximum ventilation, compared to other types of windows, like double-hung windows.

At Remodel USA, all of our windows are ENERGY STAR certified, regardless of the type you choose. We’re here to answer any questions you have. Contact us today!

Casement Window Advantages

Excellent Ventilation

Because casement windows open all the way, rather than just part of the window opening, they offer optimal ventilation and airflow. These types of windows have incredible functionality, as they fully benefit from the outside weather. These energy-efficient windows let in maximum fresh air and capture breezes for a low-maintenance, cooling effect.

Unobstructed Views

When closed, casement windows offer unobstructed views and let in a maximum amount of natural light, kind of like picture windows.

High Energy Efficiency

If properly installed, these windows have an extremely tight seal. This prevents air leakage and can increase energy efficiency.

Low Maintenance

Casement windows typically require less maintenance because they are easier to clean. Their hinged, outward-swinging design allows you to easily clean both the inside and outside of the windows at the same time.

Sliding Window Advantages

Ease of Use

Sliding windows are easy to operate, which is particularly helpful for larger windows.

Durability

They tend to be more durable because they don’t have hardware that can rust or rot.

Space-Saving

The window openings take up virtually no external space, so there are few limitations on where these can be installed.

Modern Aesthetic

Sliding windows tend to be sleeker-looking because they take up less window space in general. These windows work well with contemporary architecture and design.

Casement Window Drawbacks

Take Up More Space

Due to the outward-swinging style of casement windows, they require more space on the outside. If you have the space available—up to a 90-degree angle outwards from the window frame—then this is not an issue. But if you’re dealing with limited space outside the window, this is a definite consideration.

Not Great for Large Windows

Smaller window sizes tend to be better for casement windows. A window that is too large could be challenging to operate with a crank.

Hard to Operate in Narrow Spaces

The crank mechanism can also be tricky to use in spaces that are too constricted.

Sliding Window Drawbacks

Less Ventilation

Sliding windows don’t offer as much ventilation as casement windows, since they only exchange air from half of the window.

Higher Maintenance

Sliding windows operate on a tracking mechanism, which can easily collect dirt and debris if not cleaned regularly. If not cared for, this buildup can affect the window seal, making the windowless energy-efficient over time.

Can Be Harder to Clean

These windows can be more challenging to clean because you can’t clean the outside of the window from indoors. However, if you have a double slider, you won’t have any cleaning issues!

Less Energy-Efficient

Finally, sliding windows can be slightly less energy-efficient. This is because the seal of a sliding window must be somewhat flexible to allow for the track mechanism to work properly. Such a requirement for a flexible seal means the window sash isn’t pulled to the frame, so it isn’t absolutely airtight.

Casement vs. Sliding Windows: Which One Will It Be?

With so many options to choose from, getting new windows can seem like an overwhelming task. Hopefully, we’ve made the process a bit simpler for you by providing the pros and cons of casement vs. sliding windows. So, which do you think would be best for your own window replacement project?

Whether you choose casement windows, sliding windows, or a combination of both, we’ve got you covered. At Remodel USA, we use ENERGY STAR-certified glass and high-quality hardware on all of our windows and doors, regardless of type. We encourage you to explore the option that feels best to you and be assured that we will install the best windows for your space.

The type of window you choose will depend on several factors, including where your new windows are going and what your budget is. Traditionally, we recommend installing casement windows where homeowners desire more ventilation and airflow, such as in the kitchen (think above the kitchen sink) or bathroom. However, many people choose to install casement windows in every room of their house, from the living room to the bedroom and from sunrooms to hallways.
